My mentor mentioned that most of the times, Parents wants to feel heard, and when they think they are not being heard, what is when the conflict when conflict happens? Sometimes, parents wish to provide services; sometimes, they don't, and sometimes, case managers feel that a student should move to the least restrictive environment, but the parent wants the child to remain in their current environment. Everybody is not going to get what they want. The main goal is to prioritize; when teachers prioritize and keep small things small, this keeps situations from escalating to parents going to lawyers or district people. Case managers must listen to parents with intention. When they say they want something for their child, it is usually within reason, and case managers must listen. Case managers must also lead with the understanding that parents have the right to call for a meeting at any time if they are not happy. My mentor mentioned that she has never had a conflict with any parents. It may look like you are catering or appeasing a parent, but you do not want to poke the bear. Most of the time, parents ask for a reason. Listen to compromise, make sure the iep team is all on one accord, listen to parents, and always do what is best for the students.
