Around the world, an important social and economic indicator is the number of persons who are unemployed. It is often viewed as a measure of the health of an economy. All else equal, the higher the rate of unemployment, the less healthy an economy is deemed to be. Therefore, it is important to understand what the unemployment rate is measuring, and the definition and measurement of the key components within the indicator.
