Building Sustainability As will be discussed in lecture #4 of this module, buildings represent over 40% of final energy consumption and nearly half of all carbon emissions. They represent a substantial proportion of the consumption of raw materials, while also making up a significant portion of the waste entering landfills. Given these factors there is a significant question as to how global sustainability goals can be achieved, while still meeting the energy and resource requirements of buildings. In this report you will focus on the sustainability of buildings. In this report your group will focus on the overall environmental impact of buildings.If you so choose you may focus on domestic or a specific commercial application. Or this could be a boarder study of building infrastructure in general. In either case, it may be advised to also focus on a specific geographical region, e.g. UK or central Europe. Your report should include a brief summary on various stages of a building life cycle, including its initial construction, the operational phase (e.g. heat and cooling of the property), its final demolition and end of life impact of the building materials.Particular focus should be given to the carbon footprint and environmental impact of the different phases of a buildings life. It should also be noted that quite a lot of a building's emissions can be indirect. E.g. a house building in a sprawling suburb, where car ownership is effectively compulsory is going to have a greater environmental impact, than an identical building in a compact city with good public transport.Your group should research and critically analyze any environmental impact or LCA studies on these different phases, as well as case studies. Next you will consider how the performance of buildings can be improved and the dilemmas that may result. For example, is it better to demolish older buildings and replace them with newer more modernstructures, or are there ways the older building stock can be retrofitted and improved?How will buildings be heated and cooled in future? What happens to the waste from buildings? How does urban design effect building performance?Finally, the report should include a discussion chapter. This will act as an opportunity for your group to present the salient points of your report. You might also comment on any policy barriers to the sustainable development of buildings and what could be done to change this. Based on the discussion chapter you should finish with a conclusion, which should summarise the findings of your report. You may find as part of your research that different sources differ on specific matters, e.g. you may come across multiple figures for the LCOE or the carbon footprint/kWh. You should include in your discussion any reasons for such a divergence. It is crucial that your report is well supported by references. Ideally these should be drawn from academic journals as much as possible. However, government reports, manufacturers data sheets, textbooks and course notes are acceptable alternatives.
