Court-imposed penalties against 7-Eleven operators have now topped $1 million, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO). A Brisbane-based man is the latest 7-Eleven operator to be penalised for short-changing workers and falsifying records to conceal the underpayments.

The Federal Circuit Court ordered the owner to pay $28,000 in penalties, and his company JS Top Pty Ltd to pay $140,000. This litigation was commenced by the Ombudsman, which alleged the owner underpaid eight of his workers a combined $19,937. The owner admitted his company had paid flat hourly rates as low as $13 an hour, which is well below the minimum wage.
