CPS 310 Phase 2 Data Flow Diagrams, Data Dictionary, Process
Specification
Due Date: Friday, July 19th,11:55PM (PDF format, via Canvas)
Overview
This phase involves several tasks:
1. Revise your document from Phase 1 based on comments you received.
2. Develop Data Flow Diagrams.
3. Create a Data Dictionary.
4. Complete Process Specifications.
Your Task
1. Based on comments left by the professor for your Phase 1 grade, revise your document and
make any other changes you deem necessary. It is especially important to revise the context-
level data flow diagram should you have comments from Phase 1.
2. Building off of your context level data flow diagram, create a Diagram 0 as we have discussed in
class. If possible, create at least one process that can be further decomposed into a child
diagram. If you are unable to create a child diagram, include an explanation of why.
3. For the data dictionary, create data flow descriptions for each flow in your set of data flow
diagrams, craft the needed data structures for your system, and data store descriptions for each
data store in your set of data flow diagrams.
a. For the data flow descriptions, include a uniquely descriptive name, a description, the
source, the destination, the name of the associated data structure and any needed
comments.
b. For the data store descriptions, include the data store id, a name, alias, description and
name of associated data structure.
4. For each process identified in your set of data flow diagrams, create a process specification.
Include the number, name, description, input and output data flows, reference to the associated
structured decision, and any comments or unresolved issues.
a. Attempt to include at least one of each technique of structured decision: structured
English, decision table, decision tree. If you are unable to use one of the techniques,
explain why.
Graduate Students
For the graduate students in the class, please expand your data dictionary to include five data element
descriptions. Each description should include the name of the element, any aliases, a short description,
whether the element is base or derived, the type of data it contains, validation criteria, default value if
appropriate, and any needed comments. This is required for graduate students but undergraduate
students may include this for extra credit.
Deliverables
You are required to turn in a PDF document containing the revised portions of Phase 1, additional data
flow diagrams as the system allows, a data dictionary, and process specifications for each process
identified in the data flow diagrams. Only one submission per team is needed on Isidore. Ensure your
document has a title page with the phase number and all names of the group members. A separate peer
review will also need to be submitted through Canvas
