Create a Basic ERD.

LocalTown Library is considering converting the current manual library system to a new automated system. Funds have been secured to purchase the hardware necessary to fully automate the card catalog, inventory, book check-out and book purchase processes that are currently accomplished using a manual process.

At present the following manual processes are in place.

Purchasing.

When a new book is published, the library receives a flier from the publisher containing the book: title, author, ISBN number, copyright date, number of pages, number of illustrations, publishers name, publishers address, local representative for the publisher and book cost.

If the head librarian decides to purchase the book for the library, a purchase order is filled out and sent to the publisher. The purchase order contains the following information: book title, book author, ISBN and number of copies.

Book Check Out.

A library patron can check out a book if the following conditions are met:

  1. The patron has a current library card
  2. The patron does not have more than two other books checked out.
  3. The patron has no books overdue.

Books can be checked out for two weeks. At the end of that two weeks time the library begins to charge an overdue fee of twenty cents a day not to exceed $5.00 per book or $25.00 total. The fine can be changed at any time by a two thirds majority vote of the Library committee.

Card Catalog System

The Card Catalog System is a system of 3X5 cards used to store information about each book the library owns. There are three kinds of cards, a title card, a subject card, and an author card. Each card contains the following information: the author, the title, the ISBN number the library id number (this number is used to locate the physical copy), the copy number, the copy-right date and a brief description of the subject of the book.

Inventory System.

The inventory system is updated every time a book is returned or checked out. An identification card for the book is removed from the book cover. This card contains the book title, author, ISBN, library ID, copy number and date due back to the library. When a book is returned, the identification card is pulled from the checked out file and returned to the book cover. The book is then returned to the library shelf. Once a week an excel spread sheet is updated to show those books checked out and those books returned. Once a month a list of overdue books is compiled and sent to the head librarian.
