Intro? Intercultural Marriages Intercultural marriages face many barriers, including language, differences in religion and values, gender roles, child-rearing, and relations with families and friends (Jandt,2021). Barriers Communication Language. The greatest obstacle I face in our marriage is language communication. My husband is fluent in both English and Spanish. While Tagalog, which is the native language of the Philippines, is my mother tongue. Despite the English language being taught at a young age in the Philippines, I struggle to speak it, even though I know the language. The Philippines' educational system places a much greater emphasis on information retention in English than on improving students' communication skills. Putting one's English skills to the test in real-world situations has never been recommended. When we cannot effectively communicate and comprehend what each of us is trying to say, circumstances arise. One example is language proficiency. Because I cannot find the words to convey what I am attempting to say adequately, I cannot fully express myself. I need to translate my thoughts into English before I can say what I think because it might come across incorrectly and unintentionally offensive to him if I do not use the right words. Multilingual extended family. With his multilingual extended family, communication itself can be difficult. The grandparents of my husband only speak Spanish and do not comprehend English. As a result, everyone speaks Spanish when we spend time with his grandparents and family. I sometimes feel like I have been displaced culturally because I am missing entire conversations, and I cannot rely upon my husband always to be there to translate
