Something that this course taught me is the importance of being self aware and taking care of oneself as to avoid burnout. Over 70% of psychology graduate students report a stressor that is detrimental to their overall function (El-Ghoroury et al., 2012). This really illustrates that those that go into higher education in this field may not be taking care of themselves as much as they should and their performance is lacking due to this. They report many barriers to self care, cost being a major one (El-Ghoroury et al., 2012). This highlights that focusing on self-awareness, self-care, and managing burnout is some essential skills if one wants to be consistently successful and productive they must realize when stress is taking over. This is all part of metacognitive skills.

Furthermore, I think resume and cover letter writing is one of the most important aspects of this class. Both entry level careers and graduate schools are going to be looking at these items in the selection process so regardless of what one wants to do they must possess this skill. I think that this is one of the things that people struggle with the most, and it is also one of the things that is the most intimidating to people. They do not like talking about themselves or highlighting their strengths. This is something one must be good at when applying for jobs or schools. Another really important aspect of this class is the little details about how to answer some difficult interview questions and how to do well in an interview in general. I plan on using a culmination of all these skills when I go to apply for grad school.
