My study intends to explore the influence that social media has on the mental health of young people as its primary objective. To be more specific, I want to address the study question, which is as follows: Does excessive usage of social media cause depression, anxiety, high/low self-esteem, and social support aid in young adults? To accomplish this objective, I will carry out a quantitative research project in the form of surveys, and the participants will be young people aged 18 to 25. The research aims to investigate whether or not there is a correlation between the usage of social media and one's mental health. To do so, the use of social media, frequency of use of social media, and the kind of social media platform utilized are the predictor factors that I propose to explore to determine whether social media influences young people's mental health. On a scale that ranges from "never" to "very often," a Likert scale will be used to determine the value of the social media use variable. The frequency of usage variable, on the other hand, will be assessed by having participants report the number of hours per day that they spend on social media. In addition, we will determine the kind of social media platform used by asking participants to pick the platforms they run from a list. This will be done so that we can analyze the data.

The proposed outcome variable for studying social media's impact on young adults' mental health is a composite index comprised of multiple mental health indicators, such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and social support. We will assess depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a reliable and valid depression screening instrument. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) is widely used to measure anxiety symptoms. We will assess self-esteem using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), a well-established and validated instrument. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), a reliable and valid measure of social support, will be used to assess social support.

My research query will investigate a relationship using a correlational design based on the predictor and outcome variables I chose for my study. I want to ascertain the extent, intensity, and direction of the relationship between the selected predictor and outcome variables. In the social and behavioral sciences, correlational designs are beneficial for investigating relationships between variables that the researcher cannot manipulate. Using this design, I aim to comprehend the relationship between predictor and outcome variables and identify potential causal pathways.

Indicators of mental health such as depression, anxiety, self-esteem, and social support may be substantially affected by social media use, according to accumulating evidence. As young adults spend more time on social media, there are growing concerns that excessive use may contribute to various adverse mental health outcomes. Depending on their use, social media platforms can be both a source of social support and a catalyst for anxiety and depression. This research question investigates the relationship between social media usage and these mental health indicators to determine how to best assist young adults in managing their social media behaviors for optimal mental health outcomes.
