These improvements are typically achieved through bargaining with the leadership of companies. While I have not had personal experience with unions, I do agree with the concept. Especially in nursing where there are so many nurses leaving the bedside as well as the field in general it is time to advocate for better benefits for our nurses, and healthcare workers in general. Unions work to develop higher standards within the field and improve overall quality of life. Typically, wages and benefits negotiated are better. There are also safeguards within union contracts which aren't a great with state and federal legislation. Some examples are an eight-hour workday, which was pushed by unions and impacts others, as well as advocating for established breaks during the workday.
