create a response to the following: Per our textbook, Ethics is a term that refers to a code or moral system that provides criteria for evaluating right and wrong. This situation clearly describes a significant ethical dilemma for Jim Fielding, involving financial reporting, manipulation of sales figures, and major consequences for Horizon Corporation and its stakeholders.
I think there are several issues involved including in my opinion the one that is most obvious is fraud and misrepresentation. This action of knowingly creating a false transaction to deceive stakeholders is glaring. Potentially, this action could avoid auditors watchful eyes, investors and creditors alike. The controller is being pressured by the CFO to participate in unethical and illegal actions. This Jim Fielding in a difficult position where he must choose between loyalty to the company and to the CFO versus adherence to ethical standards. I believe that Jim Fielding should act in the best interest of the company, which would be to maintain integrity of financial reporting and not taking the action that would jeopardize the company.
The other issue that I see that was discussed in depth during this chapter was revenue reporting and recognition. According to GAAP, the revenue should be recognized when it is earned and realizable. We even factor in warranties and potential returns to reduce revenue when reporting this data. Clearly in this case, the items were all going to be returned and the CFO knew that, thus revenue should not have been reported for this fraudulent sale.
This situation highlights the challenges between short-term survival and long-term ethical conduct. While the CFO's suggestion might seem like a solution to avoid immediate financial distress, it compromises the integrity of the financial reporting process and violates ethical and legal standards. Even though auditors help for prevent find these issues, clearly someone wanting to commit fraud could potentially get away falsifying records if they really wanted to.
