Create an argument for University:
Case:
Hiroshi was a football player for a public university. He was the first member of his family to attend a university and was proud of his athletic scholarship. Hiroshi made decent grades, and unlike most of his teammates, generally stayed out of trouble. After a game against the university's in-state rival, Hiroshi posted several comments online about his decreasing amount of playing time and the coaching staff's alleged lack of leadership, which had resulted in lower team morale. The university president was so infuriated by Hiroshi's negative comments that he terminated Hiroshi's scholarship. To make matters worse, Hiroshi did not find out about his scholarship termination until he tried to enroll the following semester. Hiroshi was confused by the president's decision because he did not violate a university rule or policy and did not have an opportunity to challenge the president's ruling. Hiroshi sues the university, claiming that his constitutional rights were violated.
Questions to think about when formulating your debate position response:
- Do athletes have a right to complain about a lack of playing time or problems regarding their coaching staff on their social media accounts?
- How should coaches, athletic directors, and school officials respond when dealing with such issues?
- Is this hypothetical, the president terminate Hiroshi's scholarship without notice or the right to explain or defend his behavior. Do you think the decision was a violation of Hiroshi's constitutional rights? and why?
