Create your Personal Development Plan. Make it tangible by writing it down. Some people even maintain a written journal. This makes it real. For this assignment, your plan should be typed in Microsoft Word. Come up with at least 5 personal goals you have over the next year. They can be personal (become "fit", get out of debt, learn a new skill, etc.), but at least 3 of them need to be career goals. If you have more than 5, it's too many. You can't multitask these - it doesn't work. You need to be able to focus on one goal at a time. Be certain to make these SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-sensitive). Instead of something like "get in shape", it should be "lose 10 pounds by July 4th" or "bench press 200 lbs. by the end of the year". A lot of people dream big, but forget to make it a goal they can actually achieve. (BTW, "become a millionaire" sounds great, but is not SMART). It is not recommended that this plan be shared on your portfolio site, on LinkedIn, or on your resume. While someone may ask questions during the interview process, like "Where do you see yourself in 5 years", it should not be shared with the world. Some of your goals may eliminate you from consideration of a job offer.
