Creswell and Creswell (2018) made the distinctions between the literature used for qualitative studies and quantitative studies. In quantitative methods,presenting a theoretical framework is crucial to the study, which will have been designed to test the theory. However, qualitative studies can also use a theoretical framework. Simply put, a theoretical framework involves presenting a specific theory, such as systems theory or self-efficacy, and empirical and conceptual work about that theory.According to the JD-R model, employee well-being can be attributed to two primary categories of job aspects: job demands and job resources. Job demands encompass the physical, social, or organizational elements of the job that necessitate prolonged physical or mental exertion, consequently linked to specific physiological and psychological tolls (Demerouti et al., 2017).

A theory applicable to this research is the Job Demand-Resources (JD-R) Model. This psychological model is relevant because it explains how job demands such as high workload, shift work, emotional labor, and job resources such as support from colleagues and supervisors can impact employee well-being and burnout. In healthcare, the JD-R Model helps frame the research by providing a theoretical foundation to explore the relationship between the demanding nature of healthcare work and the resources available to healthcare workers.

The JD-R Model suggests high job demands can lead to burnout when they outweigh available job resources. In the healthcare setting, long working hours, the emotional toll of patient care, and the challenges associated with shift work represent significant job demands. Simultaneously, support from colleagues, access to mental health resources, and effective leadership can serve as job resources. This theory will frame the research by examining how specific job demands contribute to stress and burnout among healthcare workers in Charlotte, North Carolina. It will also help identify what job resources may mitigate these negative outcomes. Additionally, the JD-R Model provides a structured framework for understanding the interplay between stressors, coping mechanisms, and contextual factors in the healthcare profession, aligning well with the research questions and the overall purpose of the study.
