Cultural competence is an important part of our work as Human Service Providers. As we consider development, it is especially important to assess our clients using theory and milestones from the developmental domains and not our own experience as the norm. We have to use self-reflection as we prepare to work with our clients when it comes to understanding experience.

Identify 2 developmental variables that impacted your development (remember- variables can have either a positive or negative impact). Nature, nurture environment, genetics, poverty, violence, socio-economic status, and culture are examples of variables we consider as we discuss development through the lifespan. Explain how these variables shaped who you are today.
