Current Issues and the Law Analysis Select a topic and find an article related to law that you would like to further explore. You want to demonstrate a breadth of knowledge and understanding so do not select a topic you have already used in the other unit. This must be a current article/issue (no older than 6 months since last reported on), from a reputable source. In general, an article from a major media outlet would be considered reputable; however editorials from blogs or other 'online' sources may not be reputable for the purposes of this class. Some topics that have been recently trending are: Roe v. Wade (abortion) Canada's Gun Laws Facial Recognition Technology Vaccine/Masking Mandates Right to Disconnect Extreme Intoxication Defence Quebec lanquage laws Parole for Racialized communities Decriminalizing all Drugs Solitary Confinement You do not need to pick one of the topics mentioned above, they are only suggestions. However, if you are selecting a different topic, please email me and let me know or drop into the office hours to share the topic with me. What should I include in the Current Issue and the Law Analysis? You should include the following information. (You may use the following information/subtitles to help organize your write-up) Summary - A summary of the article in your own words. (50-100 words) Sources of law - Identify the area(s) of law that vour article topic/issue falls into and explain why it fits there. Review lesson 2.3 if needed. (up to 100 words) Questions - Pretend you are going to lead a seminar on this topic. Create 1 question on the topic/issue from each of the legal thinking concepts (Legal Perspective, Change and Continuity, Interrelationships, and Legal Significance). Remember to review what makes up a "good question" Answers - Answer the questions you have created (answer lengths will vary but the 4 answers should not exceed 1000 words). To demonstrate higher level critical thinking skills you may wish to consider opposing viewpoints (analysing/answering questions from more than one perspective if applicable). Reminder if you complete outside research to answer your questions, you need to cite it (MLA) and provide a works cited page. Once completed please submit to the dropbox provided under Assignments.
