Current Legal Issues in Human Resources Report

As future Human Resources practitioners, or as informed employees, it is important to stay up to date on current events surrounding labor and employment law. Your homework assignment for this semester is to find an article that describes a current legal issue you may encounter in the workplace. Then, write one page single spaced memo summarizing the content of the article, and how this topic may impact your company.

The article should be from within the past calendar year. Your article can cover a specific employment issue in the news, pending legislation, a recent court decision, recent guidance from the EEOC or DOL, a decision from the NLRB, or anything else that touches on employment law.

Your write-up is due on the date indicated below. You may submit your memo and article in hard copy at the beginning of your assigned class date, or via Canvas by the end of the day on your assigned date. When you submit your memo, please submit your article as well (you may submit your article as a hyperlink if it is available online). Some students may be asked to discuss their articles/topics in class.

What is an "article" and where can I find one?

For this assignment, an "article" includes just about any writing, audio, or video relating to employment law or the relationship between employees (or contractors or labor unions) and their employers. Examples include: blog entries, press releases, newspaper articles, news broadcasts, podcasts, etc.

I suspect many of you will just Google until you find something. That's fine. Mainstream media outlets are another great source. But, here are some other ideas: I have created a Twitter "List" of people who tweet primarily about employment law, often with links to "articles" that would be great for this assignment (https://twitter.com/PhilipMiles/lists/emplaw). Also, agencies (such as NLRB, DOL, EEOC, etc.) often include press releases on their websites (EEOC page as an example:http://www.eeoc.gov/eeoc/newsroom/index.cfm). You may also want to check out some employment law blogs, and find a recent issue that interests you. Finally, you are all now case law experts - feel free to pick a recent court opinion relating to employment, and use that as your article.
