Cybertherapy and Avatar Therapy are effectively used with individuals and groups. It is an intervention that uses a digitally generated 3-D virtual world where clients and practitioners interact through their respective avatars (not through real-life photos or live images). The created avatars represent interactions between the client and therapist in a virtual world on a computer screen. The virtual world promotes creativity and gives the client an opportunity to express how they either "see" themselves or the way they desire to be "seen" without verbalizing it to the therapist. With adolescents naturally gravitating towards technology, Cybertherapy and Avatar Therapy could potentially ease apprehension related to therapy participation. Since the therapist and client are each responsible for creating their avatars, the therapist can extract information about both positive and negative client depictions of themselves. An example would be if the client exaggerated any features or made themselves disproportionately smaller than would be appropriate for his or her age. These occurrences could facilitate the therapist in identifying and addressing what the client needs to improve their self-esteem and become part of their goal, care, and treatment plan. Psychotherapy is the underlying theory connected to this intervention Cloud Front (2000).
Explain whether you would use the intervention in your practice. Why or why not?
