Data acquisition using sensors and its application in measurement system As opposed to conventional measurement using (non-digital) instruments, modern measurement process is often computerized, with electrical sensors as the sensing component. Typically, measurement data is acquired by connecting a sensor to a data acquisition (DAQ) device, which in turn is connected to a computer. The data acquisition software will then be able to output the measured data, provided that the conversion between the sensor's electrical signal and the measured physical quantity is known. This overview of a measurement system is schematically illustrated in Figure 1. Sensor DAQ LabVIEW Figure 1: General scheme of a measurement system Suppose that you are gifted a sensor, and you would like to build a measurement system to be used in an application that is relevant to the sensor. Table 1 shows the information and the assignment of these sensors for the purpose of this AL: Distance sensor (Sharp GP2YOA21) Cytron www.GIRON.COM.MY Example: https://my.cytron.io/c-sensor/c-optical-infrared-sensor/p-analog-distance- sensor-10-80cm?src=category In short propose your desired application and describe the entire measurement system building process, including the DAQ hardware and software of your choice. To elaborate further, the report should contain the following: The working principle of the sensor The application - it can be a smart system, or a scenario that requires the sensor to sense or do measurement The DAQ device of choice* - information of the DAQ device (e.g. its specification and pin diagram) and how the sensor is connected to it The DAQ software of choice* - the general steps and the programming / coding involved (e.g. which command / block, the options or settings relevant to data acquisition, especially explanation of sampling frequency and other sampling related settings) *Just like any DIY project, you are free to decide what DAQ device and DAQ software to be used. As a starting point, common examples of basic DAQ device include: NI-USB6001 and even the Arduino Uno, while possible DAQ software include: LabVIEW, Arduino IDE (if using its board), MATLAB (data acquisition toolbox).
