Note that if we choose the initial height to be a vertical position of 0 in our coordinate system, we should record these other vertical positions as negative (assuming we use a coordinate system where upwards is the direction of the positive height-axis.

4. Use the velocity and the vertical position in each case to calculate the total mechanical energy at each moment, including the beginning.
