Data loss prevention (DLP) is a system that tries to detect and stop sensitive data breaches in organizations. A data leakage incident is when sensitive data is disclosed to an unauthorized person. The disclosure could be deliberate, or it could be accidental. The sensitive data could be proprietary company information, intellectual property, financial information, credit card data, or private health-related information. It could even be personally identifiable information (PII).   Data loss prevention is an important element in the development of data management practices, a risk assessment plan and security policies. These practices and plans assist the security professional in troubleshooting the infrastructure using protective mechanisms.
