Dave is a defensive midfielder in Lacrosse (much like a defender in soccer, a defenseman in hockey, or a defensive back or cornerback in football) At the beginning of every game, Dave matches up against his opponent - the man he'll be guarding all day. After the first whistle, Dave intentionally takes the end of his lacrosse stick and "cup checks" his opponent by placing his stick between his opponent's legs and lifting it up as hard and fast as he can.
