Demonstrate a critical thought process about below: Hot pursuit is another emergency created by the need to apprehend a fleeing suspect. If officers are chasing a suspect whom they have probable cause to arrest, they can follow the suspect into a house without getting a warrant (U.S. v. Santana 1976). So officers wouldn't need a warrant to enter a home to search for a fleeing armed robbery suspect and weapons. But how extensive can the search be? Only as extensive as is necessary to prevent the suspect from escaping or resisting. So officers can't search every nook and cranny of a house just because they got in lawfully during a hot pursuit (Warden v. Hayden 1967). Nor can they search every room of a hotel because a robber entered the hotel (U.S. v. Winsor 1988).
