Assignment Information

We can expand our multicultural understanding and insight by participating in other cultural rituals. This assignment will challenge you to choose and participate in a cultural event different than your ownand then reflect on your experience with the other culture in a brief reflection paper.

 This assignment will help you achieve the course objectives:

1. Articulate an awareness of one's own culture and worldview (as related to experiencing another culture).
2. Articulate an awareness of others' culture and worldview.
3. Identify theories associated with diversity and multiculturalism.
4. Identify some of the historical and sociopolitical contexts framing different cultural experiences.

Assignment Information

1. Select a cultural event: Choose a cultural event that interests you. Examples of suitable events include attending a church service primarily serving a particular ethnic group, participating in an LGBTQ pride festival or event, joining an American Indian powwow, or visiting a cultural center. If you have another event in mind that is not listed, please send me a message to ensure it aligns with the purpose of this assignment.
2. Provide evidence of attendance: To validate your participation and increase accountability, you can earn 10 out of 100 points by providing evidence of your attendance. This can be done by uploading one of the following:
   • a copy of the event's flier
   • a picture of the event's or cultural center's sign
   • a ticket stub from the event or cultural center
     • Note: If obtaining a physical representation is not possible, you may take and upload a selfie of yourself (without interfering with the event). If you choose this option, please consult with your instructor to confirm it is appropriate and ensure it fulfills the requirement. 
3. Write a reflection paper: Write a 4-6 page reflection paper about your experience. addressing each the following:
   • What drew you to this cultural experience initially?
   • Provide a brief description of the culture being showcased and explain the role of the event. (This may require some research). 
   • Describe what you witnessed at the event/cultural center in an objective manner. Be explicit in detailing the occurrences).
   • Share your subjective experience by describing how you felt before, during, and after the experience.
   • Discuss any challenges you encountered during the experience and explain why they posed a challenge.
   • Reflect on what you will take away from this experience.
