Description of Assignment: Task 1: In class test (AC1.1, 1.2, 1.3): The 1-hour test will take place on May 26th at 1.30. Read through the assessment criteria so that you understand what you need to revise. You will be asked to produce Punnett squares as part of the test. The test conditions can be found on the following page. Task 2 (AC2.1): Use flowcharts to depict the phases of meiosis and mitosis, focusing on the movement of chromosomes. Hand drawn images should be included. Provide a typed justification of why certain chromosome movement events are important. (500 words maximum). Task 3 (AC2.2, 2.3): (500 words maximum): Gene and chromosome mutations are two types of alterations that occur in the genome of an organism. Explain what is meant by mutation and discuss the difference between these two forms (AC 2.2). Explain the causes of DNA mutation in a human being, and how risk of mutation can be reduced (AC 2.3). Task 4 (AC3.1): You work for a genetics counselling service and have been asked to write a letter to a 25-year-old woman who has been referred for genetics testing by her GP. She has expressed concerns that she may have genetic mutations linked to two genetic diseases. In your letter, choose two genetic diseases and explain how they can be managed by the individual and the NHS/government policy. How can this disease be prevented? (350 words maximum). As you are writing to a patient, assume that she is not a science specialist.
