Design the membrane portion of the membrane bioreactor. ( Given: Q = 2 6 9 . 3 3 m 3 / d , BOD 5

Design the membrane portion of the membrane bioreactor. (Given: Q =269.33 m3/d, BOD5=169.8 g/m3 and TSS =89.9 g/m3 SRT =5 days V=124.88 m^3 HRT =11.13 hr). You have chosen a Zenon ZW 500 D system, with an operational flux of 15 gfd determined through comparative pilot testing between different available systems as your membrane system. The operational strategy you want to use is 12 min operation followed by 2 min relax. Also you want a recirculation rate of 4 times the permeate flow rate. Calculate the following:
(i) Calculate the actual design flux (in gfd) based on your operational strategy.
(ii) Calculate the membrane area (ft2). Calculate the number of modules needed.
How many would you actually use? Based on the above calculate the actual operational flux (in gfd)
(iii) Calculate the recirculation rate?
(iv) Contrary to the example discussed in class, larger submerged systems like Zenons system actually do not have a separate membrane tank, They are actually immersed into and form a part of the bioreactor. Do you have enough space in your bioreactor to fit all your modules? If not what would you do?
