Determine the values of induced stresses and dimensional changes that occur in the materials of a series connected compound bar and a parallel connected compound bar when subjected to direct loading. Task 3 a) A structural parallel compound bar consists of a rectangular steel bar 12x12mm. It is clad with strip of magnesium which is 3x12mm. The bar is subjected to a compressive load of 25KN. i. ii. Steel Magnesium Determine the induced stress in the steel bar and magnesium cladding if Young's Modulus for steel Es = 207GPa and for magnesium Em = 45GPa. If the bar had an original length of 500mm and experiences 0.02% strain, what dimensional change takes place in the compound bar. b) A series compound bar consists of a steel bar which has a Young's Modulus of 205GPa. The bar has a diameter of 55mm for a length of 0.5m. Further along its length the diameter is reduced to 45mm for a length of 0.1m. Determine the stress in the bar for section 1 and 2 and determine the change in length when an axial force of 5KN is applied.
