Did you know that at around 2300 BCE, the Sumerian rulers codified a list of offenses against society? Create a law enforcement lifeline so that you can identify some of the key patterns in law enforcement. What drove law enforcement down and what pulled law enforcement up? Draw or color on a Word document (you can be creative and use PowerPoint or other illustration ) a horizontal line across the middle of your page. On the left-hand side of the page, write PAST, and on the right- hand side, write PRESENT. On the top half of the page, write PEAKS, and at the bottom, write VALLEYS. Now spend time recording on this chart five significant events in law enforcement. Start as far back as the 1700s and continue to the present. If an event was a peak (a high point, significantly positive experience) put it above the line. If it was a valley (low point, a significantly negative experience) put it below the line. Identify five peaks and five valleys. Jot down a couple of words to identify what made each event a peak and what made it a valley. Next, make note of what may have motivated the event in law enforcement to climb to each peak or the values that guided the actions along the way. Do the same thing for the valleys. Once you've done this, reflect on the themes or patterns you see in the peaks and the valleys then answer the question, "Based on your research, do you believe police-community relations will prosper in the future?
