The file is broken down into five columns: Column 1 Year of the outbreak Column 2 Relative severity ranking of the outbreak Column 3 Number of tornado reports in the outbreak Column 4 Number of severe hail reports in the outbreak Column 5 Number of severe wind reports in the outbreak Use the dataset to answer the questions below: a. Determine the mean, median, and mode of the number of wind reports and the severity ranking index columns of the dataset. Describe your results, and specifically discuss the utility of each measure of central tendency, based on your knowledge of when to use or not use each measure. b. Plot the tornado reports, hail reports, and wind reports all in three separate boxplots. Also, formulate five number summaries on the three report types. Interpret the results. Is it obvious from these results why these were considered major wind events? Explain. c. Typically with the ranking index, the number of events exceeding some threshold is indicative of the major outbreaks. Assuming this threshold is a ranking index of 0.25, determine the number of wind reports (using an appropriate central tendency measure) and the IQR for events for major events (those above a ranking of 0.25) and for non-major events (those below a ranking of 0.25). Is this ranking index doing a good job of characterizing severe wind outbreaks? Explain your reasoning. wind_outbreaks.txt Dataset we needed to use 1960 0.3968208 9 1 7 1960 0.156263 2 0 3 1961 0.1444246 10 1 7 1961 0.2830781 7 2 6 1961 0.1258707 12 0 2 1961 0.2452705 6 0 6 1961 0.07492937 6 2 8 1961 0.1862151 8 1 5 1961 0.3258324 6 2 17 1961 0.09579834 2 2 10 1961 0.8557362 11 3 14 1962 0.05694438 8 3 9 1962 0.6755703 4 3 24 1963 1.695709 14 0 5 1963 1.242222 17 2 12 1963 0.220234 7 1 7 1964 0.5113825 6 0 6 1964 0.2355718 3 0 12 1965 0.0799512 1 1 6 1965 1.267324 15 2 6 1965 0.0862502 7 1 3 1965 1.151916 33 2 6 1965 0.06002221 9 0 17 1966 0.2011567 11 5 17 1967 0.3303763 11 0 12 1967 0.4717089 9 0 15 1967 0.2505833 20 1 5 1967 0.4713702 16 2 20 1967 0.4388422 11 6 21 1968 2.018132 20 3 14 1968 0.02074053 6 3 17 1968 0.6069112 12 1 23 1968 0.003593245 6 8 24 1969 0.5353609 14 0 4 1969 0.3085226 7 7 32 1970 0.4513441 15 5 26 1970 0.2628406 4 0 48 1970 0.845833 15 1 54 1970 0.1027333 6 1 9 1970 0.1776737 9 0 14 1971 0.05339745 3 3 10 1971 0.06848794 5 0 40 1971 0.02347516 1 0 13 1971 0.1614424 14 1 4 1971 0.1111556 2 4 13 1971 0.2606129 7 6 22 1972 0.4035644 7 1 9 1973 0.460199 10 1 5 1973 0.9609976 16 3 24 1973 0.2693801 15 0 9 1973 1.516726 34 12 46 1973 0.05547419 12 4 12 1973 0.9005488 25 4 19 1973 2.431948 34 8 25 1973 4.110488 40 6 25 1974 1.247222 10 3 93 1974 0.4629478 7 5 17 1974 1.4863 3 30 147 1974 0.02264316 3 4 19 1974 0.3075655 14 0 13 1974 0.01600111 5 2 12 1974 0.09200894 10 0 24 1975 0.1234033 12 0 15 1975 0.675485 12 6 77 1975 0.3740895 14 4 56 1975 0.3224919 15 9 28 1976 0.20058 7 3 40 1976 0.5846195 14 0 53 1976 0.5966836 21 7 21 1976 0.09624062 7 0 2 1977 0.1202111 7 0 5 1977 0.2072445 9 1 27 1977 1.16198 18 4 15 1978 1.695124 18 6 31 1978 0.09639759 10 0 12 1978 1.096099 26 17 61 1979 2.007004 30 15 80 1979 0.04013922 16 0 2 1980 0.1838824 9 0 20 1980 0.7510394 13 0 19 1980 0.300233 10 1 5 1981 1.887005 17 40 148 1981 0.07754843 3 4 16 1982 0.3701528 12 3 15 1982 0.01356149 5 10 56 1983 0.2145196 9 3 59 1984 1.204983 42 15 129 1984 1.461136 36 26 105 1984 0.6033998 10 15 85 1985 1.459635 18 45 270 1985 0.2421289 8 11 95 1985 0.123324 23 11 33 1986 1.652074 19 11 69 1986 0.07228246 12 0 10 1986 0.5002191 23 8 24 1986 0.0497633 6 9 41 1989 1.802771 17 21 143 1989 0.003170683 0 3 71 1989 0.004304066 4 7 24 1989 1.545211 31 24 116 1990 0.1129916 11 1 37 1991 0.03797405 14 7 71 1991 0.6172808 20 6 93 1991 0.2339333 7 32 103 1991 0.04295037 4 18 125 1991 0.06687939 2 7 97 1993 0.5905055 11 0 63 1993 0.172033 4 45 140 1995 0.05126969 17 21 112 1995 0.3010533 21 34 108 1996 0.001743631 3 17 146 1996 0.3689234 11 52 178 1997 0.00936292 1 5 146 1997 0.05070688 22 7 77 1997 0.4046727 28 23 91 1997 0.002035285 6 28 114 1998 2.39549 26 37 308 1998 0.06503884 1 31 200 2000 0.09297021 17 13 62 2000 0.004991968 1 13 79 2001 0.3255714 14 23 69 2001 0.02399637 3 11 41 2001 1.07999 33 27 115 2001 0.210278 23 21 95 2001 0.007942691 6 5 32 2002 0.225825 6 21 318 2003 0.3302703 21 5 16 2004 0.9258148 25 35 249 2006 0.6782458 7 47 360 2007 0.3917948 20 15 73 2008 0.1304081 17 6 66 2008 0.1375582 7 13 348 2008 0.006118494 12 6 26 2009 0.4403116 26 27 93 2009 0.5226734 22 22 140 2011 0.0168339 10 3 61 2011 2.260888 46 116 1088
