Directions: For each statement, indicate the response that most closely identifies your beliefs and attitudes. A person who comes from a dysfunctional family is generally unlikely to become a good family therapist. In working with couples or families, from the outset I would explain what a "no secrets" policy means and the reasons for such a policy. In practicing couples counseling, I would be willing to see each of them for individual sessions in addition to conjoint therapy. Counselors have an ethical responsibility to encourage spouses to leave partners who are physically or psychologically abusive. I would not be willing to work with a couple if I knew that one of the individuals was having an affair. It is ethical for family therapists to use pressure and sometimes even coercion to get a reluctant client to participate in family therapy. Therapists who feel justified in imposing their own values on a couple or a family can cause considerable harm. In couples or family therapy, confidentiality needs to be thoroughly addressed from the outset. Most family therapists, consciously or unconsciously, work to keep the family together. There are ethical problems in treating only one member of a family. I would be willing to work with a single member of a family and eventually intend to bring the entire family into therapy. Before accepting a family for treatment, I would obtain supervised training in working with families. Before working with families, I need to know my struggles with my own family of origin. Skill in using family therapy techniques is far more important to success in this area than knowing my own personal dynamics. I support requiring continuing education in the field of couples and family therapy as a condition for renewal of a license in this area
