Directions:In this task, you will be assuming the role of an importer within an industry of your choice in Canada. You will be researching products, calculating tariffs, and designing a business card for your new import company.
You have $100,000 with which to buy products from around the world. Which ones you import will be up to you.
- Choose an industry to focus on (e.g., furniture, electronics, clothing, automotive, food). Name your Import Business.
2. Select at least four different products to import from overseas. For each item you must show:
- A picture of the product;
- A brief description of the product;
- The supplier of the product;
- The country of origin;
- The Harmonized Code for calculating the duty on the product;
- Note the following information about calculating costs:
- All imports to Canada are required to pay the 13% HST.
- The Harmonized Product Description and Coding System (HS) is used to describe products for customs purposes. This coding system ensures that customs officials around the world are referring to the same item when classifying a product and applying a tariff rate. The HS assigns six-digit codes that represent general categories of goods. All countries adhering to the HS use the same six-digit code for each product.
- You can find the HS code for a product online using Canada Post.
- Once you have an HS code, you can consult the Canada Border Services Agency's customs-tariff schedule to find the duty rate for the product.
- The tariff rate.
3.Show the total cost of your imports including units, shipping charges, taxes and duty (not to exceed $100,000).
4. You are using an ocean liner to ship your products to Canada. Pick one ocean port in Canada to ship your items to and explain why you chose this port.
5. Choose 5 major cities in Canada you will ship your products to.
6. Determine how you will distribute the products to these cities and provide a rationale, on the basis of the factors listed in the "Physical Distribution" section in this lesson. Use Google Maps to draw a distribution map showing your port and the distribution routes to each of the five major cities.
