Disability Interview

This interview assignment is to identify a person to interview on the topic of disability. This can be either a person whom you know with a disability, a parent of a child with a disability, or someone who teaches or works with children or adults with disabilities. Once you identify a person, ask them if they would be open to being interviewed on questions related to their experience of life with a disability, or being the parent of a child with a disability, or working with people with disabilities.

  1. Can you tell me a bit about your disability? (or the disability of your child / or what types of disabilities the children or adults you work with have)
  2. What is it like to live, work, or attend school with this disability? (or to have a child with this disability / or to work with children or adults with this disability)
  3. Have you (or your child / or the people you work with) ever encountered discrimination or other challenges based on this disability?
  4. If so, can you share some examples?
  5. If not, why do you think this is the case?
  6. Have you developed any unique insights, strengths, or perspectives because of your disability?
  7. If so, could you share some examples?
  8. What would you like other people in society to know about this disability? (or your child's disability / or the disability of those that you work with)

Final Reflection

Once you complete interview and have written down the responses to the questions that your interviewee gave, please write your final reflection by answering the three questions below. Please write approximately one paragraph for each prompt.

  1. Without using their name, please describe the person you interviewed. What is their age, gender, and ethnicity? How did you meet or get in contact with them?
  2. What did you find surprising or interesting about this interview?
  3. How did this interview change the way you think about disability? What new things did you learn from it?
