Book Review of Bastiats The Law

Bastiats book The Law explains his opinion of what the law should be and what the law has become. Bastiat explains that the law is an organization that is put in place for everyone to be lawfully defended against any and all injustice. Even though this book is his opinion, to me it makes complete since and should be fact. Everyone on Earth should have the right to defend themselves, their life, their property, and their freedom. And doing so without interference from people who have been put in place of authority. The place of authority that individuals have voted for the authorities to be in should not be taking any advantage of peoples God given rights as human beings. The boundaries of freedom should not be overstepped, but in Bastiats book he seems to think that they have. He explains that if a nation is founded on respect of individuals freedom, then harmony and order would be the result. He thinks that if the government respected its citizens rights to their individual person, freedom, and property then no one would have any argument against the government. There would not be the problems of poverty, there would be equal opportunity for jobs, and the money that people earn would be theirs and they would possess the right to do with their earnings as they please. When the government gets involved in their citizens income, Bastiat sates that this makes citizens present and future unstable and uncertain, as well as brings on more problems for the government by having this responsibility. When a system is out in place where the few have the power over the majority, problems are going to be inevitable. He thinks that this power given to few brings perversion to justice and inflated importance to the few in power.

I agree with Bastiats views. I think we were created to be free and should be able to live freely with a government put in place to protect us against injustice, not suffer injustice by those we elected to protect ourselves, our family, our income, and our ways of making a living. If a person was to violate a law that creates harm or injustice to another person, the law should be enforced to protect that citizen. We are not living freely if we feel we are being victimized and taken advantage of by the very law that was put in place to protect us from injustices. If society felt supported by their government and protected from them then I believe people would be motivated to live within the law and life would be in harmony.
