Discussion #4- The Chicken Ranch

1. Mrs. Swine and Tillie were run out of town for being Yankee traitors not prostitutes during the Civil War. What does this convey about the values of people in La Grange?
2. Miss Jessie Williams ran a respectable brothel that serviced politicians and lawmen but never drunkards. Does this live up to your idea of respectable? How so or not? Can an illegal trade or establishment ever be respectable? (Think- Robin Hood stole from the rich but gave to the poor and mafia often helped immigrants and the poor but were also drug dealers)
3. How do you feel about the girls sending packages and letters to local men who were fighting WWI?
4. Do you think the brothel's involvement in solving crimes, releases it from its on wrongdoing?
5. Do you think Miss Jessie and later Edna Milton cared for and supported the girls or were they just exploiting them? Provide evidence.
