Discussion Question 2: Analyze Your Own Data - Part 1 In this discussion question, you must find some sort of published, existing data. Possible sources include: almanacs, magazine and journal articles, textbooks, web resources, athletic teams, newspapers, reference materials, campus organizations, professors with experimental data, electronic data repositories, the sports pages, etc. When you select your data set make sure it satisfies all the requirements in the following checklist. If you are unsure about your dataset, check with me (use the Ask the Professor forum) before working on it. (1) The dataset you select must have at least 100 cases. ( 2 ) The dataset must have at least two categorical variables and at least two quantitative variables. (3) The two categorical variables should not be something where each subject/case of the dataset will have a different value. For example, if you work with a dataset of books, name of a book and author(s) of a book are both categorical variables but most likely each book will have a different name and a different author. These are not good categorical varaibles that you can easly work with. Ideally the categorical variable you choose should have no more than 5 possible values. For example, genre of a book could be a much better categorical variable than name of a book. When finding your dataset, make sure that there are at least two categorical variables in your dataset that has no more than 5 different values. (4) (EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!) It is very important that your data set contains only a sample of a larger population and not the entire population. For example, your data set can contains performance statistics of 50 soccer players from different teams in Major League Soccer. This is a sample of allsoccer players from all teams in Major League Soccer. As a comparison, your data set should not contain performance statistics of all players from one team because this will be the entire population and all players from one team is not a representative sample of players from all teams. It would be a convenience sample. You will need this same dataset in Discussion Question 3. (5) It is very helpful to have a dataset that interests you as you will be able to ask good questions about the dataset. (6) Make sure you give a reference for your data and describe all the relevant variables. (7) Include a copy of the dataset. You can upload the dataset as an attachment in any of the following form: .csv, .xls(x), .txt, .rda, .mtw, .ftm, jmp. Please let me know first if you have to use other form. 1 Analysis of one quantitative variable: For at least least one of the quantitative variables, include summary statistics (mean, standard deviation, five number summary) and at least one graphical display.
