Management Theory
A manager plans, organizes, leads, and controls resources and human capital to effectively achieve a goal (Satterlee, 2018, p. 4). To do this, a manager must understand various organizational management concepts and leadership theories. Knowledge of these concepts gives a manager the tools to help the organization reach its goals. Some of the essential tools include understanding the functions of a manager, utilizing quantitative metrics, and recognizing the characteristics of a successful manager. These tools are critical because when a manager understands these aspects, it allows them to comprehend their role, assess their success, and identify areas for improvement.
Function of Management
Good managers need to understand the functions of a manager so that they know what to focus on throughout the day. Managers must plan, organize, lead, and control situations when in charge. Planning, such as strategic planning, is important because it "has come to be seen as a prerequisite for any business activity, and in many ways, it represents the epitome of contemporary business" (Thomas, 2020, p. 215). Organization is crucial to a manager's success because organized and helpful management fosters collectivity and collaboration from departments to other companies and opens up a space for ideas to cater to the changing business world (Girdwichai, & Sriviboon, 2022). A manager must know how to lead effectively by encouraging psychological safety, increasing positive employee attitudes, and enhancing employee performance (Shore & Chung, 2021). It is also important for managers to have a well-designed control system because organizations that can acquire and exercise control over resources can use them to gain a competitive advantage (Ayu Nani & Dina Safitri, 2021). When a manager is a good planner, well-organized, a strong leader, and sets controls, it benefits the organization because it shows that the manager understands their role. This understanding is crucial because a manager who knows their role is taking the first step toward effectiveness.
Quantitative Management
Managers need to understand not only the functions of management but also how to make decisions. This can be accomplished through quantitative management theory, which uses "tools to project fiscal planning, such as production volumes, target markets, and direction for capital investment" (Satterlee, 2018, p. 43). Current management theory emphasizes planning and knowing opportunity costs, as does the Bible in Luke 14:28, which states, "For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it" (English Standard Version Bible, 2001/2016). Here, Jesus stresses the importance of counting the cost of discipleship before following Him, similar to how managers should use forecasting and strategic planning when counting future costs. Managers should be familiar with inventory modeling to reduce capital tie-up, queuing theory to minimize customer wait times, and simulations to test for problems and potential outcomes. To make the correct strategic decision metrics, management must receive and analyze management reports that are truthful to the situation (Kuznetsova et al., 2021, p. 67). These quantitative theories help managers make informed decisions and determine their success.
Characteristics of a Successful Manager
For a manager to be successful, they must understand what success looks like and recognize the personal characteristics that will help them achieve it. If managers know the characteristics that lead to success, they can determine which traits they already possess and which ones need improvement. Effective managers can build trust with employees, allowing them to "perform their best while striving to achieve organizational goals" (Satterlee, 2018, p. 14). Another essential characteristic of a good manager is knowing how to motivate individuals because "according to employees, the motivation policy of the organization affects their work efficiency, and they play an essential role in the organization's success" (Girdwichai & Sriviboon, 2020). Additionally, effective communication is crucial for a manager because employees look to them for direction (Satterlee, 2018, p. 15). These characteristics are essential for a manager to succeed and help the organization reach its goals. Therefore, a manager should evaluate which characteristics they are strong in and which ones need improvement to become a better manager.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the functions of management, quantitative management, and the characteristics of a successful manager are critical to an organization's success. When managers understand these concepts, they are better equipped to comprehend their role, assess their success, and identify areas for improvement. These three concepts are essential for every manager to understand, regardless of the scope of their management, to positively impact the organization they work for.
