The treaties allowed for the building of telegraph lines and railroads and allowed the government to sell land to incoming settlers who then were able to buy land and build farms without interference from the First Nations. In exchange, Aboriginal people were to be provided cash and farming supplies, reserve lands, education, relief in times of trouble, healthcare, and the right to retain their traditional rights of hunting and fishing.
