Discussion Topic
In this module, we are learning about nomenclature, and how we name chemical compounds. After reading chapter 5, Find an item in your home with an ingredient list. For example, food items, hair care products, cleaning products, etc. Make sure the name on the list is the IUPAC systematic name. A quick google search of your ingredient and systematic name should show you. Pick a name on the list that you are able to recognize pieces of and explain what it means using the nomenclature rules we have learned. Give the chemical formula of your ingredient. Then, do some research and explain what the ingredient does in the product (if you can find that information). Make sure to connect the name of your ingredient to what we have learned for naming, if you cannot explain some pieces, it would be better to pick a different ingredient.
For example, potassium chloride can be found in shampoo. It is an ionic compound consisting of potassium ions and chloride ions. The chemical formula is KCl. This ingredient is often used to increase the viscosity of a product. (You would need to expand more on this to meet guidelines)
