Digital Rights Management (DRM) provides protection to the owners of intellectual properties to prevent unauthorized use of contents through the use of encryption technology. Stone (2022) explained, DRM allows copyright holders restrict of how many times the content can be used in devices. DRM works in two parts. The first part is for the encryption need to protect the content and the second part is the authentication system so any users can unlock files if they would like.
The reason of the use of DRM is to prevent any piracy. Stone (2020) mentioned, "to make sure the content owners and creators receive payment for their work". It is fair for the owners and creators to receive their share of payment. Implementing DRM can let copyright owners ensure their revenue streams.
In according with Stone (2020), "media outlets and consumer protection agencies have considered DRM controversial". The argument is about how DRM restrictions holds back innovation. Consumers does not like to be treated like criminals with some of the DRM's restrictions. I think DRM is a good use of protection. Even though not many consumers like the idea of it, but it does prevent piracy
