The key is "customization" of the investing and retirement planning for one's own unique needs. After all, there are so many books, blogs, and other advice and resources out there that it would be easy to pick up some point of reference and try to use it for our own situation. Unfortunately, it does not work like that because your's and my lives, needs, income, expenses, circumstances and everything else is so unique to you and me that we need to make sure any advice handed down to us is customized for our specific needs and personalities. The above statement does not even include our preferences as different people that impacts our choices in life. Investing, although an intimidating topic to the novice, is part of the larger personal financial blueprint. While other goals and actions discussed in this class may be easier to comprehend and execute, investing for the future, well, it determines your future and is an important part that we cannot afford to ignore due to its complexity. Investing, like many other personal financial matters, is a combination of logic, basic rules and discipline, but also ourown personal preferenceson what level of risk are we comfortable with and what do we expect back in the form of return for the assumed risk taken. While the assigned readings may be comprehensive and include variety of investment topics, some perhaps complicated, I recommend that all students start by solely focusing on the basics, stocks and bonds, and trying to understand those topics and how to invest in those areas before moving on to more complicated options. Most importantly, I want all students remember that this information is not an on-size fits all, but a set of information that should be customized to individual needs.
