The OSI model is a 7-layer networking frameworkthat uses protocols and mechanisms.The functions of the seven layers of the OSI model are provided by a combination of applications, operating systems, network card device drivers and networking hardware that enable a system to transmit a signal over a medium.

Understanding the 7-layer OSI model is very important for network engineers, for network application programmers and cybersecurity specialists.

For each and every one of the 7 layersyou must discuss in detail the following, no cut and paste - use your own words:

For each layer:

1. Describe why the layer is important for networking, including examples of network-related protocols that are associated with this layer. (7 Marks per layer)

2. Discuss why the layer is significant to software development/programming. What does the programmer need to know about this layer when writing network-aware applications? (7 marks per layer)

2. It makes sense that cybersecurity threats can happen at any layer. Data is entered into the network through software. It then travels through all the layers. Each layer has its own protocols and other communication standards that govern its efficient operation. So where does security fit in?

 

Discuss what the role of this layer is in cyber-security (i.e. How does this layer handle security?, what are some security implications in this layer, etc)
