Dr. Crabtree conducted a study to see what stress reduction program worked the best to help individuals deal with the unwanted stressors of daily modern life, which these days includes living through a world-wide pandemic leading up to the most divisive election in modern times while the biggest supreme court nomination battle is about to begin. But who is stressing? So anyway, Dr. Crabtree is looking at three different methods for reducing stress (traditional therapy, an exercise program and a relaxation/meditation program). 180 subjects were recruited from introductory psychology classes. They each spent three months in one of the stress reduction programs (60 subjects in each condition). Stress was measured after the three week programs using the Homes-Rahe Stress Inventory that scores users on a scale of 100-500. Dr. Crabtree found that that there was no significant difference in the stress scores between the three conditions of his study. It appeared that all three programs were equally effective. Question One - What is the population in this study? (worth 2 points) Question Two - Are the participants randomly selected? Explain (worth 2 points) Question Three - Identify the independent variable (with levels) and the dependent variable in this study. (worth 3 points) Question Four - What type of variable is the dependent variable (on what scale is it measured)? (worth 2 points) Question Five - What is a likely Research Hypothesis for this study? (worth 2 points) Question Six - What would be the corresponding Null Hypothesis for the above? (worth 2 points) Question Seven - What is the operational definition for "stress" in this study? (worth 3 points) Question Eight- If there is a difference in the stress levels of individuals who utilize the three different stress reduction methods (in the larger population) what type of error (Type 1 or Type 2) occurred in the study as described above? Explain. (worth 3 points) Question Nine - If the dependent variable is changed from stress scores to stress levels (high, average and low) what type of variable would it be now? (worth 3 points) Question Ten - Discuss any possible confounds or problems you see with this study as described. (worth 3 points)
