Dr. Tell worked with a woman for several months on depression, anxiety, and relationship issues. During one session, the patient indicated that her boyfriend had lost interest in sex and became more involved with online pornography. The client realized what she said and stopped talking. After being questioned, the client reported being apprehensive due to confidentiality. He then reminded her of the confidentiality laws in her state that would override it. The client uttered during an intense discussion with her boyfriend; he revealed his uncle did the worst. She detailed the uncle's behavior over the years as it applied to child pornography. The boyfriend soured her to secrecy. The client questioned if she could give the information about the uncle and if the counselor could report to the authorities; she does not want to be further involved. The client is feeling helpless at this point. Dr. Tell explained that the alleged perpetrator was removed from their sessions several times. The alleged perpetrator was a client of Dr. Tells. She did not believe she had the duty to report it. The client then requested that her boyfriend come to the next session with her. The client thought it would be a good idea; they could all discuss the information together. The Dr. remind the client where her focus should be, on her dilemma and the relationship issues with her boyfriend. Dr. Tell contacted someone to discuss whether she had to report this information to the police or Child Protective Services. The Dr. also had to determine if reporting would jeopardize her client's confidentiality; she also weighed whether to bring the boyfriend in.
I am using the ethical decision-making model: Tarvydas's (2007) Integrative Decision-Making Model of Ethical Behavior. to describe the Dilemma. The problem is I am having a hard time putting detailing the steps of the model.
Step 1. Interpreting the situation through fact-finding.
Step 2. Formulating an Ethical Decision.
Step 3. Selecting an action by Competing Nonmoral Values, Personal Blindspots, and Prejudices.
Step 4. Planning and executing the selected Course of Action.
I already did the assignment, but my professor sent it back for step details.
