The environmental consulting company, Calgary Environmental Consultants, has recently received a contract to monitor water quality in Alberta rivers and streams. Water quality measuring instruments are placed at sites in various streams of interest. The instrument records data on various characteristics and substances (temperature, mercury etc.) of interest in the water. From time to time, a technician visits the site and extracts the data from it. When the technician returns to the office, that data will be uploaded to a database - the database you are designing. Through discussions with CEC staff, the following business rules have emerged. A stream is any watercourse which drains an area of land. Many streams have names such as Bow River" or Nose Creek", but many are unnamed. Some streams have a length recorded, in kilometers, and some streams have flow volumes, in cubic Fall 2017 Assignment 2 COMP 2521 meters, recorded from measurements at the mouth of the stream (maximum, minimum and average). When a stream flows into another stream, it is a tributary of that stream. A stream can only be a tributary of one stream, but a given stream may have many tributaries. The location of the point where a stream ends (it flows into another stream or a lake) is recorded using an NTS mapsheet number, and a UTM grid reference, to the nearest 10 m. A monitoring instrument is identified by its make, model and serial number. Instruments are purchased from a variety of manufacturers. It is important to calibrate the instruments at least once per year, so the date of purchase needs to be recorded. Each time the instrument is serviced, either routinely or to correct a problem, the date and a description of the service is recorded. A monitoring site is the location of an instrument on a stream. The exact location of the site is recorded using a NTS Mapsheet Number and UTM grid location. Monitoring at a site takes place over some time period, usually some number of months. A detailed description of where the instrument is located on the stream needs to be recorded. (e.g. To the left of the small waterfall, under the bridge, near the Troll cave.) A property (characteristics) is some value of interest such as temperature, PH, oxygen level, or suspended particles. Different properties are measured in different units, the units and a range of acceptable values needs to be recorded. There are a large number of possible properties. A reading is a measurement of some property of the water at a given date and time at a given monitoring site. It is often necessary for data to be aggregated by watershed. For example, run a report that included data from a stream and all of its tributaries. A Report is a document that is produced periodically. It uses data from one or more monitoring sites. The actual report will not be stored in the database, but the URL of its location, the date and author of the report, and which monitoring sites it refers to will be. Employees are either full-time or contract. Full-time employees have a yearly salary. A contract employee has a contract with a start date and an end date. Contract employees are paid by their hourly rate. Inspections of the monitoring site can be carried out by any employee.
