Suppose that you are asked to model the human resources database in a university. The university is interested in the following attributes for all individuals: SSN (identifier), name, address, gender, and date of birth. Only three types of individuals are of interest: employees, students, and alumnus (no other types). A person might belong to more than one type. Each instance of employee has a value for date hired and salary. There are three different types of employees: faculties, assistants, and staffs. Notice that an employee cannot be a faculty, assistant, or staff at the same time. This model of human resources is capturing the rank for faculties, and the position for staffs. For each student you need to store their major. Each student may have one or more majors. Each alumnus has one or more degrees. Degree is composed of values for year, designation, and date. There are two types of students: graduate and undergrad students. Undergrad student has the SAT score, whereas graduate student has the attribute GRE score and GMAT score. There are no other types of students, and students cannot be undergraduate and graduate the same time.
