A file identifying your group number and team mates for Group Case #2 has been posted on Carmen > Cases > Group Case #2. Select the file that contains your group assignment by identifying your Thursday Lecture Instructor and your recitation day (Monday or Tuesday). Within that file search the tabs at the bottom of the worksheets to find your recitation time. Choose that worksheet and find your name. o YOU MAY NOT CHANGE GROUPS without express permission from your instructor. If you unilaterally decide to work with a group other than the one assigned to you by your instructor, you will receive 0 points for this case. o All members of the group are responsible for communicating with each other to arrange meetings. Be professional and considerate and respond to your team mates regarding group meetings, even if the case isn't your immediate priority. o Every member of the group is expected/required to contribute to the solution of both problems in the case. o Instructors will only mediate group disputes as a last resort. Effective team work requires that the members treat each other with respect and an inclusive manner. It also requires that the team members make every effort to resolve conflicts internally. Locate the numbers in the lower right-hand corner, with the cover page as page 0. The \"0\" does not have to be visible on the cover page. o All required information on the cover page must be typed, except signatures. o Each member must sign the document. A missing signature results in a deduction for that individual. o Group member names must be listed alphabetically (from A to Z) in all places. o Secure all pages of the report together with a staple in the upper, left-hand corner. Do this before coming to class. Instructors do not carry staplers with them. o Begin each Part on a new page. o Use appropriate labeling and annotation. All graphs must be labeled below the image with \"Figure #: title.\" All tables and exhibits must be labeled above with \"Table #: title.\" Every student must submit the peer evaluation of the team members. o Every student has the right to complete his/her peer evaluations confidentially. o Each student's evaluations should accurately reflect the effort given and contribution made by each member of the group. You may be penalized for not providing an accurate evaluation of your team members. o No student's evaluations should be influenced by the opinions of other team members. o Type all required information in the peer evaluation. o Do not staple peer evaluation forms to the case. Peer evaluations and cases are processed/graded by different people. o Failure to submit a peer evaluation results in a 3 point deduction for the individual. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Improve problem solving and communication skills. Improve understanding of data analysis and statistical inference through application to real business problems. Improve literacy of statistical computing software and the output. Apply the \"Plan - Do - Report\" approach. Follow the method used in the Guided Examples in the Sharpe, et al text book for formatting your report for this problem: o PLAN Briefly summarize the objective of the analysis, important variable(s), data collection and characteristics. Formulate hypotheses if relevant Identify analysis type State and check required data conditions. Include all graphs and numerical summary used in this process. If necessary, continue/complete the verification of data conditions in the DO phase. o DO Complete all relevant analysis utilizing the pre-programmed statistical software (StatCrunch or Excel Data Analysis Add-In) to the extent possible. The data required are saved in the Excel file titled \"Case #2 Data\" posted on Carmen > Modules > Cases > Group Case #2. Use the Excel Data Analysis Add-In or StatCrunch to complete as much of your work as possible. No manual calculation or graphing should be done unless explicitly stated in the requirements for a specific problem. Any manual calculations included must be processed with the Equation Editor. o REPORT Connect the statistical results with your conclusions. Write a brief but comprehensive summary of your findings and conclusion. If warranted, make recommendations. Part I Problem: A restaurant located in an office building was operating with profit equal to 20% of gross weekly sales. In an attempt to increase sales, the owners decided to adopt a new strategy for attracting customers to the restaurant by placing weekly advertisements in the city newspaper, at a cost of $50 per week. To assess how effective the advertising has been, the restaurant owners would like to compare the weekly gross sales while using the advertisements with weekly gross sales without the advertisements. Your team has been hired to do the analysis and report your findings to the owners. You have been supplied with weekly gross sales for the 15 weeks since the advertising campaign began and the weekly gross sales for the 24 weeks immediately prior to the campaign. Specifically, you have been asked to respond to the following two questions. 1. At a 5% significance level, does the significance test allow the restaurant owners to conclude that the advertising campaign is successful in increasing weekly gross sales, on average? 2. Are the ads worth their cost? Again, use a significance test with alpha set at 5%. Problem 2 During economic downturns or as a strategy to improve competitiveness, corporations may undertake a \"reduction in force,\" known as an RIF, in which substantial numbers of employees are laid off. Federal and state laws require that employees over the age of 40 years are a \"protected class.\" Many allegations of discrimination focus on comparing employees over 40 with their younger coworkers. Consider a company employing 1317 workers. During a recent RIF for this company, 7 of the 511 employees who were 40 years old or younger were laid off while 41 of the 806 employees who were over 40 years old were laid off. Appropriate analysis of this data reveals that a disproportionately high number of employees over 40 years old were laid off during the RIF than would be expected if age was irrelevant to the lay-off/do-not-layoff decision. (P-value = 0.0005!) But does that necessarily provide evidence of discrimination? A major issue that arises in RIF's like this one is the extent to which employees in various groups are similar. If, for example, employees over 40 generally received lower performance ratings than the younger workers, it might explain why more of the older employees were laid off. Data for the last performance appraisal prior to the RIF are provided in the Case #2 Data file (worksheet titled \"Part II RIF\"). The possible appraisal results included \"partially meets expectations,\" \"fully meets expectations,\" \"usually exceeds expectations,\" and \"continually exceeds expectations.\" Because there were very few employees for whom the appraisal was \"partially meets expectations,\" those who earned \"partially meets expectations\" and \"fully meets expectations\" were combined. Perform an appropriate analysis of the data to determine if performance appraisal helps explain why relatively more of the older employees were laid off. (Note: The total number of employees in the data file is less than 1317 because some employees did not have a performance appraisal.)
