E85 fuel is a blend of ethanol and gasoline and can contain 5183% ethanol by volume. The amount of ethanol in the blend is seasonally and geographically adjusted to ensure proper starting performance. It is lowered during cold weather to ensure sufficient vapor pressure for ignition in cold temperatures. Answer the following questions, by considering E85 fuel containing 83% ethanol by volume in the blend. If listed, use data from exam handout for calculations wherever possible. a) Using combustion stoichiometry and if gasoline 1 can be represented by the hydrocarbon octane (C8H18), estimate the CO2 emissions (in grams) from combustion of 1 gallon of gasoline. Compare the value obtained to that reported by EIA, EPA or other reliable online resources. Please provide a citation for the source. b) Using value calculated in (a), estimate the net CO2 released upon combustion of 1 gallon of E85 fuel (assume that the net CO2 emission from combustion of ethanol fraction of blend is zero as it is a biofuel). c) What is the GGE of E85 fuel? d) The price today, of a gallon of E85 is \$2.85. What is the GGE price of E85? How does the price of E85 compare to a gallon of gasoline, if gallon of gasoline costs $3.39 ? 1 Gasoline currently sold at gas stations in the United States may contain up to 10% ethanol by volume. But for this problem assume that ethanol content in gasoline is zero (in other words it is 100% hydrocarbons) and the properties listed in exam handout are for gasoline containing no ethanol
