a) A lengthy and expensive research program has been proposed. If successful it will yield a product for which a strong market is assured. There is however no guarantees of such success

b) The labor force threatened to strike if its wage demands are not met. The management does not feel that it can afford the wage demand as it is unlikely to be able to recover the increased cost through higher prices. A strike, however, will be very damaging in terms of lost customer goodwill and disrupted production

c) A rare opportunity has arisen to buy a prestigious site in a city center. Interest rates, however, are currently high and this will make the cost of financing the purchase high

d) A certain product is selling well and stocks are high in anticipation of future demand. The companys scientists have, however discovered a potential fault in the product which gives it a risk of sudden failure and which, if publicized, is bound to cut demand and leave the company with unsalable stocks
