Economic evidence overwhelmingly tells us that public investments in sports stadiums, convention centers and the like are losing propositions. Yet, numerous cities, counties and states continue to make such investments, usually citing reasons relating to prestige and the quality of life. If you asked to place a monetary value on a city's prestige and quality of life, then how would you do so? Do the actions of individuals tell us anything about the values they place on these things?
