EDIT - FOR THIS PROBLEM (PLEASE COMMENT IF MORE INFO IS NEEDED AGAIN. I laid out the information provided and what is needed for this problem thank you!)

In this problem you will be designing/retrofiting a house so it will use net zero energy. What is needed is to retrofit a house with serperate areas: Geothermal, Active Solar, Passive Solar, Design and Insulation, and then Budget the overall cost to make a house be net zero energy.

DATA -

In one year the house consumes 6000kWh for electric (appliances, lights, cooking, summerdehumidifier) + 30000kWh for heat which is currently gas furnace and gas hot water.

The house is grid-connected so a lot of batteries won't be needed (you can sell your extra solar power to the grid whenits sunny and use the credit from that to buy back power when no sun. Using the energy prices between $0.10 (now) and $0.20 kWh (future)

The house is 50' * 25 ' = 1250 sq ft. ( one story above ground, with finished basement)

Front of the house gets hit by the sun in the morning and is 60 sq meters. Roof faces south so it will get max avg. sunlight.

WHAT IS NEEDED -

A 40 year investment (the budget is how much you will save over 40 years of not paying for gas and electric.

Please provide detailed explanation of each area with a data table for how this will be achieved.

NET ZERO HOUSE You have the following areas of expertise and are responsible for figuring out how ot do the area of the retrofit: Geothermal, Active Solar, Passive Solar, Design and Insulation, and Budget Baseline is the same 1951 family of four house that the solar panels problem was set up for. In one year that house consumes the following: 6000 kWh for electric appliances, lights, cooking, summer dehumidifier in basement (in a cold area, so AC is minimal). Plus 30,000 kWh equivalent for heat, which is currently done with a gas furnace and gas hot water. You will need to turn in a paragraph from each area of expertise and a table of how you will achieve these things. The house is grid-connected, so you don't need lots of batteries: assume that you can sell your extra solar power to the grid when it's sunny, and use that credit to buy back power when it's dark. The potential range of retail energy prices is between 0.10 (now) and 0.20 $/kWh (possible future). We are going to make a 40 year investment. What can you afford for a 40 year investment that would reduce the combined utility bill to zero? So, the budget you have is what you'll save over 40 years of not paying for gas and electric. Although you do have to come up with that money up front to pay for it, so might have financing costs to account for. You will be helped to know: foundation is 50' x 25' = 1250 square feet = 120 square meters. One story above ground, but with a finished basement. Area of the front of the house (hit by the sun in the morning) 60 square meters, and the roof faces south, so it's well set up to get max average sun. You want the following: How much will it cost and how much energy will it provide or save. We want good approximate answers: our goal is to understand how to do this, not actually hire contractors and pay money to do it.
